inn history
For nearly 100 years, Woodstock Inn was the gracious private home of the Clement family (after whom the dining room is named). After the last Clement heir moved on in the mid-twentieth century, the building sat empty for nearly 20 years. In the early 80's the Rice Family purchased and renovated this unique, New England style building. During Christmas of 1982, the Woodstock Inn opened and was an immediate success.
The Main Inn opened with six distinctively decorated guestrooms, each beautifully furnished with period antiques. A need for more lodging space quickly became apparent, and soon after opening, a second historic home across the street was purchased. Renovated and restored in Victorian style, the Riverside House provides guests with comfortable rooms, each with a private bath. The Deachman House directly behind the Woodstock Inn added four more guestrooms in 1995 and in 2001, the nearby Sawyer House was restored with three additional, uniquely appointed guestrooms for Inn visitors.
Incorporated into the rear of the Inn's main building is the original Lincoln Railroad Station, circa mid-1800s. The valley's primary industries of logging and paper production kept the Station extremely busy from the start. Renowned for cool breezes and pure mountain air, New Hampshire's pristine White Mountains become a popular summer destination toward the end of the nineteenth century. Trains brought wealthy tourists to explore the regions bounty of natural wonders. During the 1930's and 40's, the ski boom evolved and ski trains frequented the station throughout the winter, transporting skiers from all points south. Hardier and more adventurous than their summer counterparts, skiers were loaded onto former logging trucks and conveyed to the numerous slopes throughout the area.
Unfortunately the grand era of railroading died out in the '70s and in the summer of 1984, the abandoned station was sawed in half and moved to begin its current reincarnation as the Woodstock Station. The original freight room is now the bar area and the one-time waiting room is the lower dining room. Surviving intact, the stationmaster's office has become a small private dining room. The Stock Room was opened in 1986, with a multi-item menu offering something for just about everyone.
During the summer of 1993, the Porter's room was added and two years later, the newest member of the Woodstock Inn's family came on board. The Woodstock Inn Brewery and Brew Pub offers eleven handcrafted brews: five main brews and six seasonal brews. Each is carefully made with the freshest hops and imported grains available.
